Our extra-curricular highlights
Debating and public speaking
Students can develop their thinking, communication and teamwork skills through debating and public speaking. They also have the chance to compete in local and state events.
Creative and performing arts
Our music and art programs help students be creative and express themselves. They can participate in concerts, art exhibitions and art competitions. Through these experiences students develop confidence, a sense of self worth, the ability to work collaboratively and are able to contribute to school community and culture.
- Our Visual Arts students regularly work with practising artists through school and museum based workshops, as well as visiting galleries and museums.
- Our Orchestra, Choir and student led rock bands rehearse most days of the week and perform at multiple school events including Mac Live, Celebration Day, ANZAC commemorations, and Semester Award Ceremonies.
- Students are supported by Creative and Performing Arts staff in accessing opportunities provided by the NSW Arts Unit. These include, Schools Spectacular, Boys Vocal Program, In Concert Secondary Choral Festival and Art Smart Visual Camp, Pulse Alive, State Choir and State Music Camps.
School Chess Club
Our school chess club continues to enjoy great success ranking at the top of the Sydney Southwest interschool competition, and we now represent Sydney Southwest in the greater sydney Interschool chess competition.
We have multiple chess boards going every recess and lunch in the Library, and training happens regularly in the science labs.
Future Teachers Club
Macquarie Fields High School was the first school to have a Future Teachers Club which gives students the opportunity to teach Micro Lessons and experience what teaching really is like on the other side of the desk.
Many of the FTC Alumni are now professional teachers. The concept of the Future Teachers Club has now spread across NSW and QLD. Students in Years 8-12 are welcome to join the Future Teachers Club.
FTC Opportunities
- Teaching micro lessons to both primary school and secondary school students
- Working with our partner universities to attend teaching degree lectures
- Annual visit to schools in Armidale as part of the FTC exchange delivering STEM lessons the students developed with the support of the University of New England
We greatly appreciate all the staff who open their classrooms to allow our FTC students to experience what it is like on the other side of the desk.
Teach.NSW Teacher Education scholarships
Each year, Teach.NSW offers a range of scholarships to Year 12 students who are interested in completing a teaching degree at university. MFHS Alumni have experienced great success in receiving these scholarships because of their membership in the Future Teachers Club.
